Tips for Home Window SafetyFebruary 4th, 2016 | Posted by in Homeowners Insurance
Everyone wants to feel safe, not only from criminal mischief but from accidents as well. A moment of distraction can lead to a lifetime of regret, and nowhere is that more true than with home window safety. Luckily, it’s not difficult to dramatically improve home window safety. Doing so may not only save a life, but also cut homeowner insurance policy costs.
One simple fix is to not place furniture too near a window. Children and pets both enjoy watching the world go by, but they lack an adult’s common sense. Even a window with a screen is a danger to a curious child. Though insurance coverage may take care of the monetary cost of an injury, nothing can heal the emotional damage from losing a child to a preventable accident.
In fact, even with strategic furniture placement a better option may include installing bars. Placing window guards with emergency releases on the window will not only eliminate the threat of a child falling out, it will reduce the chances of a burglar breaking in. The secondary benefit is that either renters insurance coverage or homeowner insurance coverage will likely go down in price with this additional security measure in place. The emergency release means that the window can still be used as an escape route in case of fire, something which may also be required to maintain homeowner insurance coverage.
Another way to increase window safety is from the outside. Trimming back overhanging branches reduces the chance of a broken window during a storm, a fix that can be expensive even with insurance coverage. Though windows broken by acts of god are often covered by homeowner insurance, the deductible can add up to hundreds of dollars. There is also the risk to both the pets and people in the home from the broken glass.
Trimming back trees, moving around furniture, and installing window guards are quick and easy fixes to a very real safety hazard. It will provide peace of mind to anyone in the home, while also saving money in the long term via the homeowners or renters insurance coverage. In a world full of unavoidable dangers, it is nice to find a problem with such an easy solution.
